Walk into any California cannabis delivery menu and you will find two dominant vape cartridge types: live resin and distillate. The price difference between them is real, but so is the difference in experience. Here is what you need to know to pick the right vape for your preferences.
What is distillate?
Cannabis distillate is a highly refined oil produced through a multi-stage extraction and purification process. The goal is to isolate THC (or CBD) at very high concentrations — often 85 to 95 percent. During this refinement, terpenes are largely stripped out. Manufacturers then add terpenes back in at the end, either cannabis-derived or botanical terpenes sourced from other plants.
Distillate carts tend to be more affordable, produce a clean and consistent hit, and are shelf-stable for a long time. Many mainstream brands use distillate as their base. The tradeoff is a less complex flavor profile and a more generic effect that does not vary much from strain to strain.
What is live resin?
Live resin is made from cannabis plants that are flash-frozen immediately after harvest, before they have a chance to dry or cure. This preserves the full terpene profile of the living plant — including volatile aromatic compounds that would otherwise evaporate during drying. The frozen material is then extracted using hydrocarbon solvents (typically butane/propane) at very low temperatures.
The result is an oil that more closely reflects the original strain's flavor and effect profile. Live resin carts tend to taste noticeably better, smell more like real cannabis flower, and produce effects that feel more nuanced and strain-specific. Brands like Raw Garden, Jetty, and Lagunitas Hi-Fi Hops are known for quality live resin products available on the Hyperwolf menu.
Live rosin: a third option
Live rosin is solventless — made by pressing fresh-frozen cannabis through heat and pressure rather than chemical extraction. It is the most artisan and typically most expensive vape category. Brands like Kush Masters and select small-batch producers carry live rosin pens. If you prioritize purity and do not mind a higher price, rosin is worth exploring.
Which should you choose?
If budget is the main concern or you just want reliable, consistent THC delivery without much fuss, distillate carts are perfectly serviceable. If you care about flavor, want a more strain-authentic experience, or find that all distillate carts feel the same to you, upgrading to live resin is worth the extra cost. Most regular vape users end up keeping both on hand — distillate for everyday convenience and live resin for when they want something special.
