You spent money on quality cannabis. Storing it correctly protects your investment. Improperly stored flower degrades in potency, loses its terpene profile, and can develop mold — all of which ruin the experience. Here is how to keep your cannabis fresh for as long as possible.
The four enemies of fresh cannabis
Light — UV radiation degrades cannabinoids, particularly THC. Direct sunlight can reduce potency measurably within hours. Always store cannabis in an opaque or dark container.
Heat — High temperatures accelerate terpene evaporation and can promote mold growth if combined with humidity. Avoid storing near ovens, windows, or electronics. Ideal storage temperature is 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C).
Oxygen — Oxidation converts THC to CBN over time, producing a more sedating, less potent product. Limiting air exposure preserves cannabinoid content and prevents the harsh, stale flavor of old flower.
Humidity — Too dry, and trichomes become brittle, breaking off during handling. Too moist (above 65% relative humidity), and mold risk rises sharply. Ideal relative humidity for cannabis storage is 58 to 62%. Products like Boveda or Integra Boost humidity control packs maintain this range inside your storage container.
Best containers for cannabis storage
Airtight glass jars with sealed lids — The gold standard. Wide-mouth mason jars work well and are inexpensive. Glass does not impart any flavor or off-gassing to the flower. Fill the jar as close to full as possible to minimize air volume.
Dedicated cannabis storage containers — Brands like Canlock, Stashlogix, and others produce vacuum-sealed or UV-blocking containers designed specifically for cannabis. Worth considering if you are storing multiple strains or larger quantities.
Avoid plastic bags and standard plastic containers — Plastic creates static that pulls trichomes off the flower. Over time, plastic can impart a faint chemical flavor. Fine for short-term transport but not for extended storage.
How long does flower stay fresh?
Under optimal storage conditions (dark, cool, sealed, 58-62% RH), cannabis flower retains most of its potency and flavor for six months to a year. After one year, THC degradation becomes noticeable. After two years or more, flower may still be usable but will taste staler and feel less potent. Buy what you will use within a few months for the best experience.
